Kerala is where India’s link with Europe first began - in 1498 with the arrival of the Portuguese. If Vasco de Gama’s name isn’t as famous as that of Christopher Columbus, it certainly should be. Vasco’s journey was at the time the longest sea journey ever made by a European (many before him tried, and failed) and paved the way for the spice trade to flourish.
Fort Kochi contains a treasure trove of colonial architecture, as after the Portuguese came the Dutch, and eventually the British but in the mix were Jews and Chinese, all of whom left their mark on this peninsula in south west India.
